First off, I would like to say WELCOME to the Spain in Color Blog. I am so excited to embark on this journey of blogger life and documenting my 25th year of life with you.
My name is Mara and I turn 25 years old today. You can find out more about me in the About Me section.
For some reason, ever since I was a little girl, I have looked forward to turning 25 years old– maybe it is because I thought that it would be my first official year of “true adulthood”, or maybe I thought that I would have it all together by then. I’m not really sure.
As my 25th birthday approached, like every year, I reflected on what I have done in the past year and evaluated how well I am doing in the grand scheme of things. I was in deep thought for a while and the only conclusions that I came to is that I do NOT feel like a true adult and that I certainly do NOT have it all together.
After 30 seconds of sulking and a slight pang of disappointment, I wrote down a list of goals for my 25th year. While I won’t list all of my personal goals here, I will list a few: to be happy wherever I am, take more opportunities to learn, be consistent with a project for at least 12 months– this blog!
I do not want to be the sole focus of my blog (that would be pretty boring and anticlimactic), and I want to take advantage of this platform to help other people. This blog will not only consist of my thoughts and perspectives as a Woman of Color living in Spain, but it is also a place where you will find useful information about life in Spain, moving abroad, and much more.
What am I doing in Spain?, you might ask. In my next post, I will go into detail about that. But I originally moved to Spain for what I thought would be one year. After I graduated from college in California, I secured a job in Barcelona; and few months before I had to go, I started doing some research on what to expect when I got there, how to get a visa, what the culture was like, etc. I realized that there was very little information and that much of it was outdated or given by someone that perhaps didn’t have the same life experiences as me.
Having lived in Spain for over 2.5 years now, I can proudly say that I am fully adjusted and well-assimilated. I have learned the odds and ends of the language, politics, and culture, first hand. While my experience has not been a perfect one (by any means), it has been a fulfilling one and I think that sharing it can help other people who are looking to move to Spain or are curious about what life here is like.
This is the start of a journey and hopefully you will get to know me a bit more as we go along. Thank you so much for reading and stay tuned for my next blog post: How I Made Spain My Home.
